Powhatan County lies west of Chesterfield County, with the James River forming its northern border. It is named for Chief Powhatan and has no incorporated towns, so homes throughout the county fall under county government. The county seat is Powhatan Court House, where the historic courthouse village sits along Route 13. Much of the county is rural, with larger lots and private wells and septic systems common in many areas.
