Rockingham County is a county in the central Shenandoah Valley, bordering West Virginia to the west and the Blue Ridge to the east. It is a county, not an incorporated city, so properties here are governed by Rockingham County or by one of the incorporated towns within it. The independent City of Harrisonburg sits in the middle of the county and serves as the county seat, but homes inside Harrisonburg city limits are governed by the city, not the county.
The county includes the incorporated towns of Bridgewater, Broadway, Dayton, Elkton, Grottoes, Mount Crawford and Timberville, each with its own town government. Interstate 81 and U.S. Route 11 run the length of the county, and U.S. Route 33 crosses it toward the Blue Ridge. Much of the land outside the towns is farmland, so lot sizes, wells, septic systems and road maintenance can vary widely from one property to the next.
